You ask the students on an exam to use their calculators to find the inverse cosine of .87654322,?
expressed in degrees to 8 decimal places. Lee's answer is 28.7770 degrees. You deduct 2 points out of 10 for this only partially correct answer. Travis complains, and says that his/her last year's teacher, Mr./Ms .Oakley, told them that, when using the calculator, they must use exactly four decimal places, no more and no less. Travis goes on to insist that if s/he does not get full credit for this problem, s/he will go to the principal and/or parent to complain...

But, beyond that obvious point:

Ask them to discuss it with me later, especially if they are getting worked up about it.

If the instruction was clear, there is no situation. Students are asked to answer in this or that way, if they do not do so they lose marks. As long as the marks were deducted from all students who gave the same/similarly wrong answers, no problem exists.

Irrelevant. Ms Oakley's class is Ms Oakley's class. You don't give instructions to her students, do you?

Students need to read and follow the instruction on exam and test papers, if they wish to receive full marks.

Unless the calculator is incapable of displaying 8 decimal places, it doesn;t matter. If it is incapable, then the student needs to obtain a better calcualtor.
